SPIE Nucléaire helps build the new Georges Besse II enrichment facility to replace the EURODIF facility

2007/12/27

The Georges Besse plant operated by EURODIF, a subsidiary of the AREVA Group, has been enriching uranium on the Tricastin site in France since 1979 to meet the demands of electricity producers.

In the future plant, to be constructed on the same site, the new centrifuge process will replace the existing gaseous diffusion process which is now considered to be inefficient owing to its high energy consumption. The construction work, representing an investment of €3 billion for AREVA, is expected to be carried out over a period of 10 to 15 years.

In this context, SET (Société d'Enrichissement du Tricastin) has entrusted a consortium formed by SPIE Nucléaire and SNEF with the control, instrumentation and radiation protection part of the project.

This work, worth €19.3M, will be carried out under the prime contractorship of AREVA SGN, with each member of the consortium being responsible for 50% of the services to be provided.

Engineering studies were started during the summer 2007 and work is to begin in early 2008.

The operations to be performed on site include the construction of 20 kilometres of secondary cableways, the drawing of 500 kilometres of cables and the installation and connection of 550 cabinets (programmable controllers, servers and distribution).

This order is the fruit of more than one year's hard work and negotiations by the SPIE Nucléaire teams based in Pont Saint Esprit.

In the current context of a worldwide nuclear revival, this success strengthens our position as a major player for our clients in the fuel cycle.
