Supélec migrates to IP telephony to optimise communication between its three campuses

SPIE Communications has successfully completed the deployment of an IP telephony system on the Metz campus of Supélec, the prestigious French electrical engineering school. The school's telephony system, which has now been networked, offers the possibility of voice/data/image convergence.
Founded a century ago, Supélec is made of three interconnected and networked campuses: one in Gif sur Yvette near Paris, one in Rennes, Brittany, and the other in Metz, Lorraine. These campuses are located at the heart of prime technological environments, in the high-tech development parks of Ile de Science, Metz 2000 and Rennes Atalante, where there is a high density of research centres, higher education establishments and cutting-edge firms.
For the interconnection of its three campuses and the networking of its telephony systems, Supélec adopted new IP technologies. This change was necessary in order to update its private branch exchange switch. The goal of this project was to provide Supélec students and personnel with suitable modern communication facilities offering efficient user-friendly operation.
The ToIP system was deployed at the end of July 2007, without any break in services, in two phases:
- recovery of the existing equipment by SPIE Communications,
- integration of PBX management servers and costs.
During the first phase, SPIE Communications took care of the installation of equipment, maintenance, design office work and training.
The second stage of the project - interconnecting the three campuses - is currently in progress.
The last stage will almost certainly be the implementation of a single number.
This new IP telephony system will provide outside callers with access to all three campuses in transparent mode and at no extra cost.
