SPIE Belgium's Infrastructure division has won an order for a system to influence traffic lights at the 55 largest road junctions along the Belgian coast.

This system, developed in conjunction with SPIE Sud-Est's Automation and Data Networks department (ARI), will enable coastal trams to control the traffic lights via short range radio, thereby allowing public transport traffic to flow more smoothly. Ten trams operating along the coast are to be equipped with the new control system.

This contract corresponds to the initial stage of a project to install this new technology in all 5,000 buses and trams currently operated by De Lijn(*), as a replacement for SPIE Belgium's current system, AISY, which is based on induction loop technology.

This €350,000 order is a first step in an area where SPIE hopes to obtain further, larger contracts.
