Berlin/Ratingen, April 5th, 2018 – A few weeks ago, the lighting in the Berlin offices of SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa was switched on for the first time via the data network. The first lighting system networked via Power over Ethernet (PoE) in Germany was installed there in close cooperation with Philips and Cisco. Rather than using conventional power supply cables, the 140 installed LED lamps from Phillips are supplied with power via the data network. Each of the network-compatible lamps has its own IP address and communicates with the environment and users via the network technology provided by Cisco.
User convenience through smartphone control
The smart lighting system does not require any light switches – office workers control the lamps with a smartphone app and can adjust the brightness according to their personal needs. The facility manager can manage the property remotely – with a click of the mouse, newly installed lamps are incorporated in the system and lights are regrouped.
Continuous data collection for efficient facility management
Sensors in the intelligent lamps collect data continuously. This information on movement, temperature, and daylight incidence runs together on its own server and can be used for efficient facility management. “Wherever people live and work, they need Internet access and light. This is why networking via intelligent lighting systems stands to reason,” says André Diener from Cisco. By using data on room capacity, energy consumption can be reduced by up to 80%: that is an enormous efficiency gain because lighting represents a significant proportion of the overall costs in building management. Via the open API interfaces, it will be possible to network further IP-based systems, such as air conditioning systems, with the lighting system. The modular structure of an IP lamp creates investment security. New, even more intelligent sensors can be incorporated easily into the central software via an update. Lars-Oliver Schröder from Philips Lighting views that as the future of the smart office building: “Ten years from now, every newly installed light spot will be networked.”

For the first time, installation and maintenance of the lighting system fall within the IT department’s area of responsibility. “We supplement the lighting system developed by Philips and Cisco with our expertise in the area of technical facility management. We are still planning and installing the network-based lighting system for customers on-location but, in the future, we will be able to manage it at any time, regardless of the location,” explains Dan Fischer, Branch Manager of the Berlin branch in the Information & Communication Services (ICS) operational division at SPIE.
