Energy costs cut by 50 percent


Essen, Germany, October 17th, 2016 – AIXTRON, a leading manufacturer of deposition systems for the semiconductor industry, tasked SPIE Energy Solutions GmbH, a subsidiary of SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, with optimising energy consumption the company’s headquarters in Herzogenrath near Aachen. A key feature of this new project: to show that energy costs can be reduced significantly by using SPIE solutions in the planning, construction and operation of energy and media supply systems, even in existing buildings that have been built in the recent past.

The buildings involved in the current partnership are an office complex and a state-of-the-art research and development centre (FAB module) at the new AIXTRON headquarters. The FAB module features laboratory as well as assembly areas, where prototypes of systems for material deposition for the semiconductor industry are developed, tested and assembled. These areas are very energy-intensive due to the stringent clean-room and cooling requirements for operating laboratories and test facilities.

AIXTRON already focused strongly on energy efficiency in the construction phase. For example, all air conditioning units are equipped with highly efficient heat recovery systems and the waste heat produced by the machines is used to heat the building. All equipment is monitored and controlled by a modern building management system.

During the introduction of an energy management system in accordance with ISO 50001, the experiences made during operations became apparent: the facilities were not ideally aligned with actual demand. AIXTRON therefore commissioned SPIE Energy Solutions GmbH to carry out an in-depth analysis to optimise system operations and unlock further energy-saving potential.

On the basis of this analysis, the energy experts at SPIE created a concept to improve system operations and energy efficiency. Adapting hydraulic circuits and optimising the control technology has reduced energy costs for heating and cooling by approximately 50 percent.

SPIE guarantees the investment costs and the energy savings. This investment will also lead to an annual reduction in carbon emissions of 1,650 tonnes, thereby making a significant contribution to environmental protection.
