Wijhe, The Netherlands, 8 July 2026 – SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, has been awarded a contract by the Municipality of Zwolle for the electrical and mechanical maintenance of its 14 movable bridges. The work is part of a large-scale maintenance programme covering bridges, locks, and pumping stations, with a total value of more than €12 million. The agreement took effect on 1 July 2026 for an initial term of two and a half years, with options for three one-year extensions. This contract further strengthens SPIE’s position as a trusted partner in the management and maintenance of vital infrastructure assets.
The Municipality of Zwolle* divided the maintenance programme into three lots, which were awarded to six specialised contractors. Over the coming years, installations will be replaced, bridge mechanisms refurbished and pumping stations maintained to ensure the continued reliability and safety of the municipality’s infrastructure.
A specialist in the technical systems used in bridges, locks, and pumping stations, SPIE’s Wijhe office provides the design, installation, management, and maintenance of complex infrastructure systems throughout the Netherlands. By combining electrical and mechanical engineering expertise, SPIE contributes daily to the safety, availability, and sustainability of critical infrastructure assets.
Responsible for maintenance and optimisation
Under the framework agreement, SPIE will be responsible for both preventive and corrective maintenance, as well as additional work aimed at improving the performance and service life of the bridges.
“This contract is valuable recognition of the knowledge and experience our team has built over the years. By providing both electrical and mechanical maintenance, we can offer an integrated approach and give the Municipality of Zwolle the best possible support in ensuring the continued reliability of its movable bridges,” says Frank Keetels, Asset Management Consultant at SPIE Nederland.
* Zwolle is located 80 kilometres north-east of Amsterdam and is one of the most important cities in the northern Netherlands.
