E-Mobility: SPIE sets up additional high-performance charging stations on behalf of IONITY in Germany

Ergolding, September 2, 2020SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, was commissioned by IONITY, the Joint Venture of the automobile manufacturers of the BMW Group, Ford Motor Company, Mercedes Benz AG and the Volkswagen Group with its brands Audi and Porsche, to realise high-performance charging stations for electric vehicles along the main traffic arteries in Germany by the end of 2020. Two additional stations have now been commissioned. The goal is to establish a European network of high-performance charging stations, and in this way bolster the transition towards sustainable mobility.

In June 2020, SPIE successfully commissioned additional high-performance charging stations for electric vehicles at two motorway service stations – Donautal Ost and West near Passau – and handed them over to IONITY. Each charging station has four charging points with a capacity of up to 350 kW and can be retrofitted to accommodate two additional charging points. After a charging time of about 15 minutes, each charging station offers a range of up to 300 kilometres, depending on the type of electric vehicle. The contract includes the installation of the charging points, including cabling and connection to the power grid. “The installation, commissioning and approval of the charging points by the German Technical Inspection Agency (TÜV) went ahead without any hitches. I thank the entire SPIE team for the excellent cooperation” says Christoph Strecker, Rollout Manager at IONITY DACH.

53 charging stations already realised

In the past few months SPIE has already realised 53 fast charging stations along main traffic arteries in Germany. In doing so the multi-technical service provider connected 218 charging points to the power grid and laid more than 58 kilometres of electric cables. “We are delighted that IONITY has placed its trust in our expertise in the field of e-mobility. Our joint goal is to establish a European network of high-performance charging stations and in this way bolster the transition towards sustainable mobility”, says Dietmar Bogerl, Head of the business unit Energy & Mobility Solutions at SPIE. “As SPIE, we have been involved in establishing the charging infrastructure from the very outset. We support IONITY and other clients with planning and installation as well as operation and maintenance of charging stations for electric vehicles”, added Dietmar Bogerl.

Comprehensive expertise for the transition towards sustainable mobility

We are delighted by the successful cooperation with IONITY. Because one of our prime focuses as a multi-technical service provider is the transition towards sustainable mobility and the comprehensive implementation of charging infrastructures. Although many companies want to rely on electric mobility, many of them are, however, inhibited by the complex requirements placed on a charging point operator. They therefore need a partner who provides comprehensive advice and covers the complete service portfolio. With now more than 7,000 installed charging points in Germany, we have built up a broad range of expertise. We consider the dynamic changes of the e-mobility market as an opportunity to grow . Because the availability and safe and secure operation of the charging infrastructure provides the prerequisite for society’s acceptance of the new type of vehicle propulsion”, adds Rüdiger Graf, Head of Business Development and Sales at SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa. “For instance, last year together with RheinEnergie we founded the jointly controlled entity TankE GmbH, which provides a full-service offer throughout the whole of Germany, with uniform charging and invoicing options in the field of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Our goal is to join with local authorities and commercial partners to penetrate the market more deeply and consequently establish a nationwide charging network together with TankE”, explains Rüdiger Graf on a final note.
