Gus and Marie explain the green economy - The energy mix – 2nd episode of SPIE Group’s series of educational animated films

“Let’s go to the future”: a simple and entertaining way to find out more about the issues surrounding an economy that respects the environment and natural resources.

Cergy, 3 April 2014 – SPIE Group, the independent European leader in energy and communications services, has broadcast the 2nd episode of its series of educational videos on the green economy. Theme - the “energy mix”.

This latest episode in the saga entitled “Let’s go to the future” first describes the context of global energy consumption, the various sources of energy currently used and their consequences for worldwide carbon emissions. The heroes of the series, Gus and Marie, then explain the concept of “energy mix”, i.e. the growing use of less carbon-intensive forms of energy such as nuclear power, photovoltaics or biomass, alongside fossil fuels. A sensible and diversified energy mix being the essential condition for sustainable development!

In the form of an educational television programme, “Let’s go to the future” aims to make the general public more aware of the themes of the green economy whilst using concrete examples showing how SPIE Group activities respond to these stakes. Just like their famous Wallace and Gromit figures who launched the animated modelling clay genre, Gus and Marie are ordinary and committed heroes in this saga. The two characters explain in a simple way the stakes of an economy that respects the environment and natural resources, and act as a good-humoured support to show some of SPIE’s solutions that have been proposed or put in place to respond to this challenge. Marie, a field journalist, leaves to investigate and asks the questions, whilst Gus, with his laboratory transformed into a television studio, brings us additional information about the various solutions that can be implemented.

“The challenges of the energy transition mean that it is essential that as many people as possible understand notions such as ‘energy mix’”, said Pascal Omnès, SPIE Group Communication Manager. “SPIE Group and its clients from all sectors of the economy are committed to the green economy, and this new animated video not only brings this central theme to life but also makes it accessible to everybody.”
