Meir tunnel

SPIE WHS North West has recently completed the design and installation of LED Lighting for the A50 Meir Tunnel in Stoke-on-Trent for Amey Plc.

The refurbishment involved the complete strip out of the tunnel’s existing lighting system and associated steelwork which was then replaced with a far more efficient and low maintenance system designed and installed by the SPIE WHS team. The scheme complements our Green Economy initiative in designing schemes that effectively manage our environmental assets in meeting the challenge of ever reducing natural resources.

This fast track 5 week project was valued at £1.2m and works were carried out on a rolling night shift, with the tunnel’s traffic management system removed every morning to allow normal traffic use during rush hour. This complex operation also involved swift changeover and the utilisation of high output temporary lighting being maintained during daylight hours.

Mr. Kevan Lambe, Contract Manager for Amey, complemented the SPIE Engineering team for the incident free safe delivery of the project. Furthermore, the team were able to bring the project to a successful conclusion one week ahead of programme, thus, saving substantial Traffic Management costs; a great achievement for all the team involved.
