Anderlecht, 7 May 2026 – SPIE Belgium, a subsidiary of the SPIE group, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, is partnering with Willemen, Cordeel and Imtech to develop a unique site in Mol. The consortium has been selected to build an innovative production facility within the scope of the "PanTera" project, which centres on producing actinium-225, a promising radioactive isotope for cancer treatment.
PanTera is a spin-off from IBA and the SCK CEN nuclear research centre, which have teamed up to develop new applications for nuclear medicine. With this new facility, PanTera aims to increase the amount of actinium-225 that can be produced in order to meet the growing demand for targeted cancer treatments.
For SPIE, this project represents a major technical challenge. The company is responsible for the heating, cooling, ventilation, plumbing and technical gas installations, which are essential to ensuring the success of highly sensitive projects like this one. As this type of building has never been built on this scale before, the design work is being carried out in close collaboration with the customer.
"This is no ordinary project," states Senne Mentens, Business Development Manager at SPIE Belgium. "Here, we are helping to set up a facility that will make a direct contribution to developing new cancer treatments. This not only requires advanced technical expertise, but also flexibility and close collaboration with all partners in order to find the most appropriate solutions."
The consortium was selected following a competitive tendering process. In addition to price, key criteria included technical expertise, the reliability of partners and the feasibility of the schedule. SPIE's prior experience on a similar project for SCK CEN also played a role in the decision.
Work on the underground structure is currently under way on the site in Mol. In line with the planned schedule, SPIE will begin its installation work in late 2026. By making particular use of prefabrication, the consortium aims to ensure both operational efficiency and compliance with the highest quality standards.
The project has been designed by the architectural firm Modulo, with Tractebel acting as the project agency. In terms of energy, the site will incorporate a system based on heat pumps and air handling units, which will contribute to its efficient, future-oriented operation.
Through its involvement in the PanTera project, SPIE consolidates its position as a trusted partner for sustainable, complex and innovative infrastructure projects. The company is also contributing to the development of new treatments that may improve patient care worldwide.
