Cergy, 28 February 2023 – SPIE Industrie, a French subsidiary of SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, is actively participating in the development of floating wind farms in the Occitanie region in France. SPIE Industrie has designed, manufactured and installed the FEH (Floating Electrical Hub) system, which aims to connect the three floating wind turbines of the EolMed pilot wind farm in Port-la-Nouvelle to the onshore grid. This project, implemented by the energy company Qair, is one of the three pilot wind farms in the Mediterranean Sea. Once commissioned in the third quarter of 2025, the farm will produce nearly 110 million kWh per year, the annual electricity consumption of a 50,000 inhabitants city like Narbonne.
The FEH, on which the teams from SPIE Industrie’s Energies Marines department have worked alongside the firm Bourbon, is a device specifically designed by EolMed to ensure the smooth operation of this wind farm. It will centralise the energy produced by the three wind turbines at a single point from which the electricity will be fed into the grid.
The teams of SPIE Industrie, a subsidiary of SPIE France that helps industrial companies to overcome their digital and energy transition challenges, worked from the Montoir-de-Bretagne branch and the Ploemeur workshop on the design, manufacture and installation of the entire low voltage electrical system of the FEH, achieving the aim of energy independence.
The electrical connection buoy was anchored in late September 2023. The design and installation of its electrical system was a significant technical challenge. The SPIE Industrie teams were able to propose concrete solutions thanks to their recognised expertise in marine energy.
“The teams from SPIE Industrie’s Energies Marines department are proud to be able to use their skills and experience in onshore wind turbines, offshore wind turbines and marine energy for the development of floating wind turbines. With this project, SPIE Industrie is continuing its commitment to the development of a French renewable energy sector,” says Xavier de Noblens, Head of Department at SPIE Industrie.
