Germany: SPIE enhances AI expertise and becomes a member of IPAI innovation platform

Published on 16 February 2026

Düsseldorf, Germany, 16 February 2026 – SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, has become a member of the IPAI (Innovation Park Artificial Intelligence) innovation platform. SPIE now has access to a strong European AI ecosystem comprising researchers, technology providers and users. The aim is to benefit from emerging AI developments at an early stage, help shape practical solutions for energy, building and communications technology and further develop its own specific use cases. At the same time, SPIE is bolstering its innovative strength, visibility and general appeal as a technologically leading employer.

The IPAI is a Europe-focused innovation platform for artificial intelligence based in Heilbronn, Germany. True to its motto, “The global home of human AI”, the IPAI brings together companies, start-ups, research institutions and public stakeholders to accelerate AI-driven innovation. Its work centres on practical use cases, knowledge exchange and the development of trustworthy AI solutions that can be deployed reliably in industry.

SPIE already uses AI to improve the efficiency of processes across the planning, installation, operation and maintenance of buildings, systems and infrastructure. Among other benefits, AI-based applications support the analysis of operating data, predictive maintenance of technical systems and the optimisation of energy consumption. Looking ahead, potential applications include the automation of internal processes, stronger project management and faster, data-driven decision-making. Examples include life-cycle analyses of system data, AI-supported execution planning, building recognition for digital measurement and visual anomaly detection – such as in occupational health and safety or building security.

In the IPAI community, we develop and test concrete use cases, share best practices and evaluate new technologies at an early stage,” said Clarissa Hack, Head of Innovation Platforms at SPIE Germany Switzerland Austria. “Human AI –– in other words, AI that complements human skills, is a key feature of our services and the way we work. For example, avatars conduct occupational health and safety briefings or provide recommendations for the installation and maintenance of technical systems. We also use generative AI to make implicit knowledge available across the company. The prerequisite for successful implementation is a people-centred approach, in particular employee acceptance, which we promote through targeted awareness-raising and cultural change.”

As a technical service provider, we combine technological innovation with human responsibility. We see AI as an enabler of workplace safety, efficient processes and informed decision-making, as well as a driver of sustainable value creation for our customers. Joining IPAI highlights our commitment to developing AI in a practical and responsible way, in close collaboration with strong, trusted partners. We see the community’s collaborative approach as a key accelerator,” said Markus Holzke, CEO of SPIE Germany Switzerland Austria.
