Bad Soden am Taunus, 29 September 2026 – SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, has installed an IoT (Internet of Things)-based energy monitoring system at the Taunus Residenzen am Eichwald care home. As a result, energy consumption during the last heating season was reduced by over 10 per cent compared with the same period one year earlier. The project demonstrates how existing buildings can be efficiently digitalised and operated with minimal disruption to the existing infrastructure.
SPIE implemented the solution with the aim of recording consumption data transparently and optimising it systematically. The system is based on a LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) radio network, which covers all four buildings using two transmitters with a range of around 300 metres. The technology is designed to transmit measurement data from distributed sensors and meters over long distances to a centralised data platform. It enables quick, cost-effective and minimally invasive retrofitting in properties where conventional cabling is not economically viable.
The multi-technical service provider has installed and connected more than 1,600 measurement and control systems. The sensors continuously monitor temperatures, heating patterns and window statuses in living and communal areas. The data collected are analysed centrally, enabling the heating systems to be controlled in line with demand. The system enables a sustained reduction in energy consumption, which is otherwise high and difficult to regulate, particularly in living spaces and areas that are rarely used and therefore do not require the same level of heating constantly.
SPIE has trained a team from Taunus Residenzen on the use of the system, so that staff will in future be able to set their own individual temperature settings for various rooms, depending on the time of day, making the care home ideally prepared for the coming heating season.
“By combining LoRaWAN connectivity, precise data collection and intelligent control, we are laying the foundations for energy-efficient building management,” says Andreas Brosch, Sales Manager in the Information & Communication Services Operational Division at SPIE Germany Switzerland Austria. Dennis Hase, Managing Director of Taunus Residenzen, adds: “For the first time, this technology enables us to track heating energy consumption on a room-by-room basis and optimise it effectively, ensuring that comfort is maintained for all users at all times.”
SPIE and Taunus Residenzen have been working together in a spirit of trust for several years, including in the areas of fire alarm and visual nurse call signalling systems. Their collaboration has now been expanded to include energy monitoring.
“Buildings account for a large proportion of energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. As a partner providing technical expertise, we develop and implement practical, scalable solutions that make energy consumption in existing buildings transparent and help to optimise it. This reduces both energy costs and CO₂ emissions,” says Marcus Hänsel, General Manager of the Information & Communication Services Operational Division at SPIE Germany Switzerland Austria.
