Offshore wind turbine towers - SPIE and Haizea Breizh

Haizea Breizh and SPIE reach a milestone: 100 offshore wind turbine towers produced on the Brest polder

Published on 23 April 2025

Brest, 23 April 2025 – SPIE Industrie, a French subsidiary of SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, and Haizea Breizh, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Basque company Haizea Wind Group based in Bilbao, Spain, have announced that they have produced 100 offshore wind turbine masts together. This significant milestone strengthens their position as key industrial players in the equipment of France's offshore wind farms. After contributing to the installation of the Saint-Brieuc wind farm from 2022–2023, the two companies are continuing to collaborate on the Îles d'Yeu et de Noirmoutier, and Dieppe Le Tréport projects, thereby making a real contribution to the energy transition.

A complementary collaboration

This collaboration combines Haizea Breizh's manufacturing expertise with SPIE Industrie's impressive technical abilities in installing equipment in wind turbine towers. These complementary areas of expertise allow for a simple and efficient production chain. As a first step, Haizea Bilbao provides the painted masts to Haizea Breizh, which assembles the sections at its site at the MRE (Marine Renewable Energy) terminal at the Port of Brest. SPIE Industrie then carries out work to install all the necessary equipment in the masts. Once completed, the towers are sent to the offshore wind farms for installation. This coordinated process guarantees that projects are executed on time and to a high standard.

A strategic industrial site in Brest

Established in 2021 at the Port of Brest, Haizea Breizh's workshop covers an area of almost 40,000 m² on the polder. This strategic industrial site specialises in assembling internal components for offshore wind turbine masts.

Haizea Breizh's workshop is running at full capacity to fulfil the orders placed by large French offshore wind farms:

  • Production of 62 masts for the Saint-Brieuc wind farm (completed in December 2023)
  • Ongoing production of 61 masts for the Îles d'Yeu and Noirmoutier wind farm (scheduled for completion in late 2025)
  • Preparatory work for the production of 62 masts for the Dieppe Le Tréport wind farm (scheduled to begin in the second half of 2025)

A significant contribution to the energy transition

The collaboration between Haizea Breizh and SPIE Industrie underlines the companies' commitment to the energy transition. By pooling their expertise to equip the offshore wind farms of Saint-Brieuc, Îles d'Yeu and Noirmoutier, and Dieppe Le Tréport, they are contributing directly to the development of renewable energy in France. The establishment of these three wind farms is a major step in the development of French offshore wind power, a sector of strategic importance for achieving the national renewable energy production targets.

Once operational, the three offshore wind farms equipped by SPIE Industrie and Haizea Breizh will represent:

  • A cumulative installed capacity of almost 1500 MW
  • An electricity supply for around 2.5 million inhabitants
  • A significant contribution to the national target of generating 40% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030

"Reaching the milestone of 100 wind turbine masts produced at the Brest polder is testament to the strength of our collaboration with Haizea Breizh. This achievement demonstrates our joint ability to meet the technical requirements of French offshore wind farm projects, while contributing to the emergence of an industry of excellence in Brittany. Thanks to our combined expertise, we are able to efficiently support the energy transition," explains Xavier de Noblens, Atlantic Marine & Industry Operations Director at SPIE Industrie.

"This milestone marks a significant step in our industrial development. Our collaboration with SPIE Industrie has created a powerful industrial synergy that contributes to the energy transition, boosts the local economy and makes the Port of Brest more attractive as a key hub for French offshore wind power," add Michael Farenc, Chief Financial Officer of Haizea Wind Group and Jean-Maxime Pape, Haizea Breizh Site Manager.
