Netherlands: SPIE supports Fertilife in establishment of new production facility

Published on 30 June 2023

Terneuzen, 30 June 2023 – Fertilife Benelux BV, a subsidiary of the international Agrofertrans group, is creating a cutting-edge and environment-friendly production facility for granulated ammonium sulphate in Terneuzen. Seeking a local partner with expertise in structural and installation aspects, Fertilife drew on the expertise of SPIE Nederland, the Dutch subsidiary of SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energies and communications to complete the project.

What started as a collaboration for advisory services has now evolved into a broader partnership, encompassing various engineering disciplines beyond the initial phase. Under the leadership of project manager Sijo Sanders, SPIE Nederland's teams played a key role in this realisation.

In addition to addressing site development matters, the project also focused on steel structures surrounding the production machines, building-related HVAC systems, and process installations. SPIE Nederland's expertise in project management and engineering made them the perfect fit. The engineering team faced a significant challenge in assessing the non-European installation parts to ensure compliance with European regulations. TüV-Certified machinery specialist Frank Brugge, from SPIE Nederland's mechanical engineering division, provided valuable advice on obtaining the required CE certification for the installation by guiding the necessary EU Declaration of Conformity process.

SPIE was also entrusted with handling compliance issues related to environmental and Working Conditions Act regulations. The company conducted the initial mandatory Risk Inventory and Evaluation (RI&E) and developed an emergency response plan for Fertilife. Furthermore, SPIE provided a comprehensive 3D scan of the installation to facilitate future production expansion plans.

Olena Gots, Managing Director of Fertilife, expressed her appreciation for the exceptional support provided by SPIE: "In addition to the engineering expertise, SPIE went above and beyond by making electrical engineers from their operational team available, despite the scarcity and heavy workload they faced. The pleasant and fruitful collaboration with SPIE has made them our trusted engineering partner. They are currently assisting us in improving and expanding the installation, as well as establishing a robust Document Control System."
