SPIE Energy Poland celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, at a time of dynamic growth in the power sector.
Gdansk, Poland 12 December 2024 – SPIE Energy Poland, formerly SPIE Elbud Gdańsk, a Polish subsidiary of SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, announces new projects at a time of major investment in Poland to support the energy transition.
Dynamism of the Polish electricity industry in 2024.
The year 2024 was marked by significant investments in the electricity industry in Poland. A substantial number of tenders for the installation and modernisation of power substations were launched. Along with the substations, the realisation of high-voltage lines is also necessary, which requires important resources that are already in short supply in the Polish market.
“Recruiting and retaining skilled staff is a real challenge for energy companies in a tight market. We hope that the new Polish investments will encourage experienced specialists to stay and return to our country. In a highly competitive sector that requires highly qualified staff, SPIE is committed to attracting, developing and retaining talented people by guaranteeing them a good quality of life at work and career development,” says Leszek Goli, Managing Director of SPIE Energy Poland.
He adds: “One reason for optimism for companies in the electricity industry is the expected investment boom in the coming years, as well as the acceleration of investments in solar and wind farms. Work is also progressing on the expansion of energy storage systems, which will ensure the availability of energy even during periods of low sunlight or windless days. Preparations are underway for investments in new offshore wind farms.”
New contracts for SPIE Energy Poland in 2024.
In the past year, SPIE Energy Poland signed two major contracts for the modernisation of substations for Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) in Dunowo (to adapt the substation and connect new 400 kV lines) and Stalowa Wola (to expand existing infrastructure and install a new 220/110 kV transformer). These investments aim to improve the reliability of electricity supplies, enable the transmission of power from renewable energy sources and adjust the substations to handle higher loads.
“We completed several significant projects in 2024, including the installation of the Stanisławów-Ostrołęka line (in a consortium), the realisation of the Gogolin substation for Tauron Dystrybucja, and the installation of the Golczewo substation for Qair. This year has also seen a significant increase in the number of contracts we are executing in the field of street lighting modernisation," comments Leszek Goli.
The Managing Director of SPIE Energy Poland also reported that the company is involved in a project in Choczewo, in the region of Pomerania. The 400 kV Choczewo substation is a key project led by PSE. The largest of its kind in Poland, it involves the building of a switchgear in a three-system configuration with two bypass busbars. This investment is key to Poland’s energy transition, as it will allow the delivery of energy generated by offshore wind farms located in the Baltic Sea to consumers across the country. As a result, Pomerania will become a major player in renewable energy production.
“SPIE Energy Poland’s activities are entering a crucial phase—the main installation works have been completed, as has the installation of most primary equipment. Secondary circuit installations will be carried out, with the first commissioning scheduled for 2025,” says Leszek Goli.
The 75th anniversary and a new name: SPIE Energy Poland.
In 2024, SPIE Energy Poland celebrated its 75th anniversary. The origins of the company go back to 1949, when the Gdansk-based Elbud was established as part of the State Electrical Construction Company (Państwowe Budownictwo Elektryczne Elbud), together with the creation of the Electric Network Construction Facility in Gdansk. SPIE Energy Poland, one of the largest and longest-operating companies in Poland in its sector, provides services related to the modernisation of medium- and high-voltage electrical infrastructure.
On November 26, 2024, the company changed its name from SPIE Elbud Gdańsk to SPIE Energy Poland. The new name reflects the company’s expanded range of services, which no longer focuses solely on installing substations and lines, but also includes additional services in the energy sector, such as the maintenance of wind and solar farms.
“In the past year, we commissioned seven new electrical substations and modernised four others. We are currently working on nearly 100 kilometres of power lines. Our development strategy envisions a further expansion of our services in the broader energy sector, beyond the installation of high-voltage infrastructure, which has traditionally been our core activity. Next year, we plan a stronger return to the medium-voltage line market and a broadening of the scope of services offered in the smart city sector,” concludes Leszek Goli.
