Saint-Ouen, 10 December 2024 – SPIE CityNetworks, a French subsidiary of SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, has renovated Gournay-sur-Marne's street lighting. Residents now benefit from a better quality of life, while the council has reduced energy consumption by 70% and the carbon footprint of its street lighting by a factor of 8.
LED street lighting for greater energy efficiency
The Gournay-sur-Marne local authority called on SPIE CityNetworks to install more efficient and higher quality street lighting, with a view to achieving two objectives: improving resident comfort and reducing the town's environmental impact.
Having conducted an energy audit of the town's existing lighting system with the engineering firm E-CONEX, the Gournay-sur-Marne local authority opted for LED lighting, a solution that offers good light output with minimal energy consumption. LEDs also enable a significant reduction in light loss and light pollution in the sky.
SPIE CityNetworks was therefore commissioned to install over 1,000 lights, which offer residents greater safety and comfort. This new lighting system offers significant advantages in terms of environmental performance. Thanks to the work performed by SPIE CityNetworks, carried out in 2024, the town now consumes 70% less energy and produces eight times less greenhouse gas emissions.[1] The service quality of the system has been improved for the benefit of residents.
The local authority has also decided to modify the lighting used near natural spaces (in the Town Hall Park and on the Chetivet Bridge) to better protect biodiversity. As a result, the colour temperature of the lighting near these areas has been reduced. In addition, the street lights are equipped with presence detectors to limit light pollution.
With a service life of 50,000 hours (five times longer than that offered by conventional lighting solutions), LED technology also enables a significant reduction in maintenance costs for the town.
A remote management system for remote lighting control
The Gournay-sur-Marne local authority also adopted a smart management system that allows the individual lights to be controlled remotely and in real time, in accordance with requirements. By offering a complete, detailed overview of the lighting system, in real time, this management system enables the local authority to precisely monitor the light output and energy consumption of the town's street lights and to check for faults in the network.
SPIE CityNetworks will be responsible for maintaining the entire system for the next nine years.
"The Gournay-sur-Marne local authority has taken advantage of all of the modern technologies available to it to achieve its objectives. We are delighted to have supported this energy renovation project, which confirms our role as a partner in regional performance and sustainability," adds Bastien Pourcelle, Business Manager at SPIE CityNetworks.
[1] The CO2 emissions of Gournay-sur-Marne's street lighting have been reduced from 64.57 tonnes of CO2 per year to 8.86 tonnes of CO2 per year (estimate based on measurements taken between January and June 2024)
