Brussels, Belgium / Breda, the Netherlands, 22 April 2026 – SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, has once again been awarded a multi-year maintenance contract with Johnson & Johnson (J&J), a global healthcare company, in the Netherlands and Belgium. SPIE’s Building Solutions businesses took part in an international tender for this new, extendable three-year contract, which covers technical facility management services at three sites operating in a strictly regulated environment. The contract extension underlines the craftsmanship, reliability and strong partnership that have been built over the past decades. Above all, this renewal marks a shared long-term vision on the future, with a focus on innovation, process optimisation and the development of new facilities.
A long‑standing maintenance partnership
SPIE has been working alongside Johnson & Johnson as a technical facility management partner for many years, supporting critical sites in both the Netherlands and Belgium. Thanks to the on‑site presence of SPIE teams and their in‑depth knowledge of assets, processes, safety requirements and pharma‑specific standards, SPIE has established itself as a trusted maintenance partner within J&J’s operations.
In Belgium, SPIE has counted J&J among its technical maintenance clients since July 2020, serving its European pharmaceutical distribution centre in La Louvière and its medical devices distribution hub in Courcelles.
“During the contract term, our Business Unit has achieved an annual energy saving of half a million euros for the client, thanks to the works proposed and carried out,” says Olivier Huart, Business Unit Manager for SPIE Belgium in Walcourt.
“The new contract primarily encompasses a comprehensive technical facility management service package aimed at reducing the ecological footprint at both sites, while ensuring safety and operational continuity during the execution of technical operations,” adds Arnaud Teuwen, Contract Manager for SPIE Belgium.
In the Netherlands, SPIE has been J&J’s maintenance partner for around 20 years, formerly for Janssen Biologics. The contract primarily covers the Leiden site, one of Johnson & Johnson’s major industrial pillars in Europe. This site plays a key role in the production of biological medicines and vaccines, requiring highly reliable technical installations and strict compliance with pharmaceutical standards. The continuous on‑site support provided by SPIE’s teams, combined with their extensive understanding of the site’s assets, processes and safety protocols, has provided a level of expertise that could not be matched by new market entrants. SPIE will continue to carry out the mechanical engineering activities over the next three years.
Complex tender process
The international tender process required speed, detailed knowledge and precise coordination across multiple countries. Jerrel Bechan, Business Unit Manager at SPIE Nederland, says: “This was an intensive process in which SPIE Nederland and SPIE Belgium complemented each other perfectly. I am extremely proud of what our team has achieved here. This extension is well deserved, thanks to their effort, expertise and commitment.”
Continuity as a prerequisite in the pharmaceutical environment
In an environment where continuity is directly linked to product quality and safety, reliability is essential.
SPIE combines preventive maintenance, rapid intervention and close coordination with on‑site teams to minimise downtime and anticipate potential issues before they impact operations.
The pharmaceutical sector is growing — and the same applies to J&J’s Dutch sites. The introduction of new cleanrooms, buildings and processes, along with a steady increase in international employees bring complex challenges. J&J sees a clear role for SPIE as a technical partner: a party that understands the landscape and proactively identifies opportunities for improvement.
A role that SPIE already fulfils, according to Fred Meinema, Contract & Finance Lead at Johnson & Johnson : “The team identifies issues, combines work to minimise downtime and advises on outdated components and optimisation opportunities. We want to continue innovating in the coming years, but that is only possible if the foundation is stable. With SPIE, we know we can take important steps forward.”
Ready for the next phase
By awarding this maintenance contract extension, Johnson & Johnson confirms its confidence in SPIE’s technical expertise and ability to support critical pharmaceutical facilities. Over the next five years, new buildings will be opened, systems renewed, processes refined and standards further elevated, and SPIE is ready to support these developments.
