SPIE receives 7 prizes in the SERCE/OPPBTP Safety Competition

Published on 11 June 2025

Cergy, 11 June 2025 - SPIE France, a subsidiary of the SPIE Group, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, and the subsidiaries SPIE CityNetworks, SPIE Building Solutions, SPIE Nucléaire and SPIE Facilities, received 7 prizes - of the 22 awarded in total - for their initiatives, performance and exemplary safety practices during the 60th anniversary of the SERCE/OPPBTP Safety Competition, the award ceremony for which took place on 4 June 2025.

Four prizes for SPIE CityNetworks, a partner for cities and region performance specialising in energy and digital networks, city services, transportation and mobility

  • 1st prize in the "Material and Technological Innovation to Avoid Risks (excluding Electrical, Height and Collision risks)" category for the creation of an ergonomic handle for a compactor to improve posture and reduce exposure to vibration. This innovative solution, including all stages from design to construction of a new "silent block" handle, effectively reduces the user's exposure to vibration and prevents the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The prize goes to SPIE CityNetworks' Ouest-Centre Operational Division.
  • 1st prize in the "Material and Technological Innovation to Avoid Collision Risks" category for the design of a specific platform for the movement of power transformers. This solution, which can be adapted to the characteristics of the terrain, allows the removal and level installation of transformers in cramped electrical stations, thus reducing handling and the risk of accidents. The prize goes to SPIE CityNetworks' Sud-Est Operational Division.
  • 1st prize in the "Securing the Interim" category for the rollout of a practical assessment test on a telecom school pylon. This system makes it possible to assess the practical skills of any new employee under real conditions, their comfort on the pylon and their level of understanding of customary professional practice, in addition to checking training certificates. The prize goes to SPIE CityNetworks' Sud Telecom Operational Division.
  • 1st prize in the "Optimisation of Operating Procedures and Processes" category for the design of three educational kits to raise awareness around the use of secure tools for stripping electrical cables as a replacement for knives and cutters. This approach makes it possible to raise awareness and encourage the adoption of these alternative secure tools by users, demonstrating their effectiveness and obtaining user support. The prize goes to SPIE CityNetworks' Ouest-Centre Operational Division.

A prize for SPIE Building Solutions, a subsidiary specialising in expertise dedicated to building intelligence and performance

  • 2nd prize in the "Optimisation of Operating Procedures and Processes" category for the creation of safety standards and a video demonstrating them. In the context of strengthening the Life Saving Rules, SPIE Building Solutions has developed 11 prevention standards and produced a dedicated video, filmed on site. Designed in a short and accessible format, this video has boosted the implementation of prevention practices and was very well received internally.

A prize for SPIE Facilities, a subsidiary specialising in building maintenance and facility management

  • 1st prize in the "Leadership and Managerial Engagement" category for the safety workshops on mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) led by managers. These workshops, organised in small groups, aim to set down rules for the use of nacelles and to reinforce the practical training provided to technicians. They trained almost 300 participants, improving awareness of the look-out's role and familiarising them with emergency and rescue manoeuvres. The prize goes to SPIE Facilities' Sud-Ouest Operational Division.

A prize for SPIE Nucléaire, a subsidiary specialising in the design, installation, operational site works, maintenance and dismantling of nuclear facilities

  • 1st prize in the "Team Engagement and Participation" category for an initiative facilitating ground cable section measurements. Under the leadership of its site manager, a team took the initiative to reproduce a template discovered at an EDF site, to replace a precision calliper, which must be handled sensitively. This innovative approach has eliminated measurement errors and uses the 3D printer at the SPIE Nucléaire Technocentre Fablab.

"These 7 prizes are a perfect illustration of our teams' ability to innovate and their daily commitment to ensuring safety on our job sites. From the design of ergonomic tools to the digitisation of our training courses, each project that received a prize demonstrates that excellence in prevention and safety depends on the creativity and involvement of all our employees," says Arnaud Tirmarche, Managing Director of SPIE France.

"This year, our winners cover a particularly broad spectrum, from material innovation to training and process optimisation. This is a testament to our overall approach to safety and the wealth of initiatives carried out by our teams on the ground. These concrete solutions, based on the experience of our employees, contribute directly to reducing risks and improving working conditions on a daily basis," added Nicolas Lefèvre, Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) Director at SPIE France.
