SPIE selected by Haizea Breizh to outfit Saint-Brieuc offshore wind turbine towers

Published on 29 September 2022

Saint-Brieuc, 29 September 2022 The Industrie division of SPIE Industrie & Tertiaire, a French subsidiary of the SPIE group, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, will work closely with Haizea Breizh – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Haizea Wind Group – to install components in the 62 towers for the Saint-Brieuc offshore wind farm being developed by Ailes Marines, a subsidiary of Iberdrola.

Saint-Brieuc is the first offshore wind energy project of Ailes Marines in Brittany. It stems from the region's strong commitment to developing renewable marine energy, particularly through Bretagne Ocean Power, an organisation that is actively coordinating Brittany's industrial network. With a total capacity of 496 megawatts (MW), the wind farm will be equipped with 62 Siemens Gamesa turbines and will be able to produce enough clean energy to meet the demands of 835,000 consumers – approximately 9% of Brittany's total consumption.

Haizea Wind is a specialist manufacturer of multi-component wind turbines based in the Basque Country with over 1200 employees. The industrial group is responsible for manufacturing the 62 wind turbine towers that, together, will form the Saint-Brieuc wind farm developed by Ailes Marines. The first stage of tower manufacture will take place at the Haizea Wind Group facilities in Bilbao, where metalworking and painting will be carried out. The towers will then be shipped to the French port of Brest in order to mount the internal parts before being transported to the Siemens Gamesa factory in Le Havre. The first sections will be delivered to Siemens Gamesa in October.

The Industrie division, a trusted local partner

The Industrie division of SPIE Industrie & Tertiaire and Haizea Breizh, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Haizea Wind Group based in Bilbao, Spain, have signed a collaborative agreement in connection with a new industrial project at the Brest polder. This will be carried out in Haizea Breizh's facilities, with the site being operational since late summer 2022.
The Industrie division was Haizea Breizh's partner of choice to mount the internal parts of the wind turbine towers at the Brest polder and to manage the site. The division's national network and foothold in the area in addition to the expertise of its teams were key factors in securing this partnership.

Haizea Wind Group CEO Borja Zarraga and his project team of Magali Roquette and Michael Farenc expressed their delight at contributing to the development of renewable marine energy-related business on the Brest polder by clinching this agreement with SPIE.
For SPIE, this project will involve the mechanical and electrical assembly of all of the internal parts provided for the towers of the wind turbines at the Saint-Brieuc offshore site. The teams will carry out work on three types of section for each tower: lower, upper and central sections. These sections will be arranged horizontally when installation work is carried out before being dispatched to Le Havre for assembly prior to final installation. In addition to the installation work for this apparatus, the teams will also coordinate logistics on the polder as part of this project.

"Following on from establishing our Services Navals & Energies Marines entity two years ago, this new contract consolidates the division's standing as a key player in renewable marine energy that is actively involved in France's first offshore wind farms. We are going to draw on our presence in the area, particularly in the naval sector, the expertise that we have developed in offshore wind energy, and our local partners to successfully complete this project," stresses Xavier de Noblens, head of the department responsible for the Services Navals & Energies Marines entity within the Industrie division.
