Vienna, Austria, 17 December 2025 – SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, has been awarded the contract by Netz Niederösterreich GmbH for the expansion and realisation of three substations. The projects in Sarasdorf, Neusiedl an der Zaya and Gföhl will help increase the amount of renewable energy fed into the power grid and form part of Netz Niederösterreich’s modernisation programme. This programme provides for the new deployment or replacement of around 55 substations by 2034. Work on the three substations began in 2025 and is scheduled for completion by 2028.
Sarasdorf substation: The existing 110/30 kV switchgear installation in Sarasdorf is being expanded during ongoing operations. Once completed, the facility will include a 110 kV outdoor switchgear system with 17 bays, as well as a 30 kV switchgear building with 10 bays, additional transformers and the associated infrastructure. SPIE’s scope of services covers the engineering of the primary technology, including the earthing system, structural steelwork, high-voltage equipment, cabling, piping and clamps, as well as the secondary technology, including control systems, cabling, outdoor control cabinets and switchgear cabinets. SPIE is also responsible for the supply and installation of all components along with commissioning, documentation and connection to the Austrian Power Grid (APG) transmission network.
Neusiedl an der Zaya substation: This marks SPIE’s third consecutive expansion of the existing 110 kV switchgear system since 2020. The project includes the addition of 13 bays, the establishment of a new 30 kV switchgear building with 28 bays and the installation of four transformers for voltage transformation from 110 to 30 kV, as well as the associated infrastructure. SPIE is responsible for engineering, supply, installation, commissioning and documentation. This project will also be implemented during ongoing operations.
Gföhl substation: To ensure that large-scale photovoltaic installations in the greater Gföhl area in the Krems district can continue to feed electricity into the public grid without any restrictions, a new substation is being erected as an additional feed-in point. The 110/20 kV substation will connect the region to the high-voltage network of Netz Niederösterreich GmbH while also strengthening security of supply. SPIE is responsible for engineering, supply, installation, commissioning and documentation for the new 110 kV outdoor switchgear system with seven bays, the new 20 kV switchgear building with 18 bays, as well as the two transformers and the associated infrastructure.
“Implementing three projects of this scale at the same time requires careful coordination and solid experience,” explains Valentin Oberascher, Project Manager at SPIE CEMA, a subsidiary of SPIE Germany Switzerland Austria. “However, having worked for Netz Niederösterreich for more than 25 years, we know exactly what it takes to ensure success.”
“Our work plays a key role in powering the energy transition in Austria, and our expertise in the planning and delivery of complex infrastructure provides the foundation needed to safely and efficiently feed renewable electricity into the grid,” says Andreas Christandl, Head of the Austria operational division at SPIE Germany Switzerland Austria.
