Porsche relies on the technical expertise of SPIE

Hockenheim, 4 January 2021SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, was contracted by Porsche to install the electrical infrastructure of the new Porsche Experience Center, at the Hockenheimring race track. The unit responsible for the work is SPIE Nuhn, a subsidiary of SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa. In future, the new Porsche Experience Center will offer visitors its own handling tracks (including off-road) to experience vehicles at first hand, plus a variety of conference rooms, a restaurant and an exclusive location for meetings and events.

Comprehensive electrical services

For the new venue, with a floor area of around 4,500 square metres, SPIE carried out all basic installations. The teams set up the lighting (including all of the safety lightning) and the fire and voice alarm systems. “Regarding the lighting installations, we benefited from our many years of experience when it came to implementing extensive special lighting in the events and restaurant area. For instance, the lights have been specially tailored and designed for the Porsche brand,” reported Paul-Erwin Oswald, the project manager at SPIE Nuhn. In total, SPIE’s teams layed approximately 90 kilometres of cable, 30 kilometres of data cable and 45 kilometres of low-voltage power line. In addition, 350 smoke detectors, 160 floor outlet boxes and 1,850 lights were fitted. All installations’ styling, from the visible cable support systems through to the exhibits spotlights, was designed for Porsche.

The next step of this successful cooperation is already being planned : “we are preparing an application providing digital light control, with lighting scenes that are specillay adapted to the rooms’ use. After we implement this solution, the customer will be able to control the lighting for the entire building using a tablet and therefore have a sustainable influence on energy efficiency,” said Paul-Erwin Oswald. In the future, this technology will allow Porsche to flexibly actuate the individual lights of the lighting system via a small number of wires. They can be combined to form various groups in order to save lighting scenes that can be opened at any time.

Good cooperation as a success factor

One important success factor was and is the good coordination and agreement between the developer, the customer and subcontractors – with short decision-making channels and flexibility in the event of changes at short notice. “We worked with the developer Emodrom Bau und Grund GmbH and our customer Porsche very closely in order to meet all requirements on time. Thanks to the straightforward cooperation, we completed the task to our customer’s utmost satisfaction,” said Andreas Erich, operational manager at SPIE Nuhn. “It was an extraordinarily exciting project for us from the beginning to completion. That is why we are delighted to really be able to say that the cooperation throughout the entire fit-out process was characterised by the Porsche slogan ‘We accelerate your emotions’.
