In France, two large metropolitan authorities collaborated with SPIE on a solution to reduce traffic congestion and pollution. The clients wanted a traffic control system that could anticipate decisions needed to limit road saturation – a task their existing systems, based on real-time analysis using sensors, failed to accomplish.
To meet these needs, SPIE’s experts integrated traffic prediction into the clients’ existing decision-support algorithms, which then made choices based on anticipated traffic rather than real-time analysis. This solution reduced the need to purchase and maintain more sensors, creating significant savings for the client. The positive results also yielded significant interest from other municipalities looking to address the same problems.
