Grid Congestion: forecasting bottlenecks and unlocking capacity

Grid congestion is a major barrier to the energy transition and to the rapid connection of new energy consumers and producers.

To address this growing challenge, SPIE Nederland has created a dedicated taskforce to support customers far beyond simple advice: from constraint analysis to the operationalisation of concrete and sustainable solutions.

The taskforce Grid Congestion delivers a coordinated, cross-domain approach to accelerate measures that release or optimise capacity within the energy system. Using digital twin simulations, SPIE teams analyse energy bottlenecks and forecast consumption up to 48 hours in advance. This anticipation capability enables strategic operation of assets to achieve the most cost-efficient outcome.

AI-driven scenario tools allow the teams to test alternative configurations and validate interventions before execution, from current operational issues to the design of future energy systems. This methodology leads to faster decision-making, fewer operational constraints and quicker customer connections, while helping to keep the energy landscape reliable and future-proof.

Working alongside partners such as Envitron, Intercel, MayMaan and Tibo, SPIE turns concepts into operational solutions and supports customers end-to-end: from strategic advice to integration and long-term maintenance.

Scope 3 impact

These solutions help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by lowering fossil fuel consumption, avoiding the use of diesel generators, and optimising energy use through smart control, storage and off-grid solutions. The environmental performance achieved surpasses standard market solutions in a particularly strategic field of application for the energy transition.
