As urbanisation creates new challenges and offers a wide range of opportunities, cities and their environment have to be reconceived in line with local authorities’ choices and local people’s needs. SPIE aims to "give a new meaning to the city" so as to create new smart, efficient and sustainable environments with a potential for innovation and optimisation.
Optimising urban development
SPIE is working to promote sustainable mobility by helping to set up transport systems causing little or no pollution. The Group is also making a big contribution to improving traffic flows by means of smart systems designed to optimise the management of vehicles and provide operators, motorists and users with information in real time. In addition, SPIE is developing, enhancing – and improving the safety of – transport infrastructure (roads, motorways, airports, and rail, sea and river traffic).
Enhancing public areas and their safety
In the fields of street lighting, traffic signals, video surveillance, access control, renovation of urban districts and historic building highlighting, SPIE draws on its expertise in external networks and public lighting to help redefine urban areas in order to build less polluting, more energy-efficient, better lit, safer cities.
Making buildings smart: SPIE’s e-nitiative Buildings offering
SPIE brings its expertise into play to improve buildings, in projects ranging from renovating old buildings to fitting out buildings complying with France’s high environmental quality (HQE®) standards. Its goal of optimising buildings’ overall performance covers all types of construction, including offices, industrial premises, schools, administrative premises, hospitals, housing, museums, sports complexes and shopping centres.
These initiatives are aimed at:
- improving building occupant comfort by means of home automation equipment and connected information systems,
- ensuring the security of property and people,
- facilitating the work of operators,
- monitoring and automating installations by adjusting parameters according to occupancy,
- increasing the reliability and life of installations,
- providing quality service by managing every location in buildings at all times,
- optimising operating costs,
- meeting energy challenges and protecting the environment,
- reducing carbon footprints by using new energy sources.
Developing intercommunicating regions
Local authorities are, nowadays, aiming at communication without borders and towns are being reinvented to provide residents with optimal quality of life. Through developments in urban-integrated digital technologies, in areas such as Big Data” and the Internet of Things, a wealth of data from sensors and supervisors can be processed to provide customised services, such as for energy use management, building occupant comfort and transport system regulation. Advances in Open Data provide citizens with access to public data along with capabilities for online development of their own applications. SPIE works alongside urban development stakeholders to contribute to the emergence of smart cities. In healthcare, for example, the growing use of connected objects is promoting the development of remote medicine and holds crucial promise for remote applications in preventive and everyday care for patients. In education, digital developments are transforming both teaching practices and learning modes. Rollout of these technologies is backed by SPIE’s know-how in digital infrastructures, equipment implementation and global facilities management.
Supporting the energy transition
Owing to changes in Europe’s energy landscape (new modes of consuming and using electricity, the intermittence of renewable energy sources, and the aim of reducing carbon emissions), electricity utilities are modernising power grids with new information and communication technologies. SPIE is assisting with the implementation of a balanced, diversified and flexible energy mix by providing operators with effective solutions and helping them to make good use of new digital technologies, such as smart grids. The aim of smart grids is to monitor, model and supervise power consumption and to smooth peaks so as to achieve a balance in real time between supply and demand, while also reducing carbon footprints.
SPIE’s field of operations covers infrastructure for the production, transmission, transformer and distribution of energy and its use by consumers. The Group combines its long-standing know-how in electricity and its expertise in new technologies to propose, install, manage and maintain innovative next-generation systems.
