SPIE has won a new contract to assist with a massive works programme to modernise 22 road tunnels for the Ile-de-France highways authority. This programme was launched in 2008 with the aim of enhancing the safety of these tunnels in the Ile-de-France region by equipping them with the latest technology and reinforcing their structure.
The action plan being implemented includes a series of standard improvements for each of the tunnels, such as installing smart cameras to detect problems and alert central control operators, audio warning devices to warn motorists of hazards, additional more clearly indicated emergency exits and barriers which can be lowered to stop traffic in case of danger. Specific work is also to be carried out on all ventilation and smoke extraction equipment and to enhance fire protection (by means of thermal barrier coatings on walls and surfaces to prevent tunnels from collapsing due to heat generated by fire).
Having already played a part in improving the safety of motorway tunnels at Champigny-sur-Marne (A4), Le Landy (A1) and Nogent-sur-Marne (A86), SPIE Ile-de-France Nord-Ouest has been awarded a contract for modernisation work on Bobigny tunnel and covering structures at the ends of the tunnel at Lumen and Norton, in consortium with Guintoli, Gonnet Isolation and Nidec.
The work to be performed by the InfraCo/Transport department of SPIE Ile-de-France Nord-Ouest includes:
- renovating and optimising the reliability of HV and LV power supplies and extending five electric substations,
- bringing lighting safety systems into line with standards,
- integrating new equipment into the tunnel’s central technical management system,
- ensuring the preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment in service during the work period and a one-year guarantee period.
This contract is to be completed within 42 months.
