SPIE installed the 80 solar panels of the first sustainable high-voltage substation in the Netherlands

Emmeloord, November 8th, 2017 – SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, participated this afternoon in the opening of the sustainable Emmeloord Zuidervaart high-voltage substation. This will be the first high-voltage substation in the Netherlands that can generate its own power. The 80 solar panels installed on the roof were connected by SPIE, who managed all the realisation. The substation is ready for commissioning.

TenneT has built Emmeloord Zuidervaart as a pilot for a green and sustainable high-voltage substation. The high-voltage network operator has been environmental-friendly with green and sustainable initiatives (insect hotel, frog pool…) The solar panels, connected by SPIE, provide a large part of the substation’s power consumption. Panels will be switched off when the consumption, detected through a special mesuring device, will be too high. Experience gained with this substation improves the operations on the Vierverlaten substation, in which SPIE is also closely involved. Jan Arends, Director of SPIE Nederland’s Energies division, commented: “We are constantly working to improve safety and quality as part as our partnership with TenneT. We are delighted with the continuation of our cooperation in the field of sustainability.”

With the arrival of the new high-voltage substation and adaptation of the entire high-voltage infrastructure for the connection of the Noordoostpolder wind farm, the electricity grid has been upgraded and prepared for a (sustainable) future.
