SPIE introduces City Networks - Street lighting adapts in real time to the needs of built-up areas
Increasing energy costs, ageing installations, exponential growth of built-up areas: these are all factors that make street lighting a real headache for the managers of local authorities. For a single municipality, it can account for almost 60% of the total electricity bill and means that numerous maintenance agents constantly on the move. For SPIE, the solution has been reached by adapting street lighting to the life and needs of the built-up area (natural light, passing seasons, and annual or one-off events). Each lamp must receive the exact energy needed for it to operate perfectly. With centralised remote management via communicating ballasts, the SPIE Group's City Networks system allows a single person to control remotely every single light source in a built-up area. Numerous benefits come from matching intensity of the lighting to life in the districts, optimising the operation times and monitoring energy consumption in real time. With this process, local authorities will be able to reduce their energy bill by as much as 40%, increase lamp life by 20% and reduce maintenance costs considerably. Environmental repercussions
In France, street lighting accounts for almost 600,000 tonnes of CO2 discharged into the atmosphere and more than 3 million lamps to recycle each year. In a context of controlling energy consumption, the City Networks method meets the new environmental criteria for local authorities. By avoiding over consumption of energy and current peaks, the system ensures an appreciable lowering of CO2 emissions (67 tonnes for a town of 25,000 inhabitants) and a 20% reduction of waste by increasing lamp life. Another expected benefit is that the atmospheric, noise and visual pollution caused by the movement of maintenance and repair vehicles will be reduced. Because breakdowns are located from a central computer, maintenance agents are sent directly to the defective equipment without having to do rounds in the districts. City Networks meets the ever-increasing demands of residents in built-up areas for street lighting. It adapts to for the living and security conditions in each district. In areas termed "sensitive", intensity of the lighting is increased to maintain the sense of security. In other areas, City Networks can reduce the power of a lamp by up to 50%. With the latest generation lamps, light pollution can be quickly eliminated at certain times of night. Another service for the occupants is that defective lamps will be located and replaced immediately. It will no longer be necessary to complain to have a defective lighting installation replaced. "The City Networks method is being adopted by an increasing number of local authorities", says Daniel Labanowski, business development manager for SPIE Ile-de-France Nord-Ouest. "For instance, in the suburban community of Sénart en Essonne, SPIE has committed to cutting energy consumption by 35% and eliminating light pollution during the first year." The LumiVille Trade Fair
