Essen, August 29, 2014. Once the new Wolfgang-Borchert-Gymnasium in Halstenbek near Hamburg has been completed, SPIE GmbH will operate the secondary school for 18 years. The Essen-based multi-technical provider was awarded the contract by HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions which planned the school on behalf of the community of Halstenbek as a public-private partnership project, is currently constructing it and will operate the school in future. Operation accounts for some EUR 10 million of the total contract volume.
The new 1,000-pupil secondary school is due to be completed in fall 2015, and is celebrating its cornerstone-laying today. Apart from state-of-the-art classrooms, the new building will contain further areas, some open to the public. These include an auditorium, a branch of the Halstenbek community library, and a dining hall. An existing combined heat and power plant is to be integrated into the new building and an existing three-section sports hall will be linked to it. SPIE will be responsible for facility management at the school, the library and the sports hall. This will include maintenance and servicing of the building engineering systems, protection and security services, cleaning, winter services, and upkeep of the outdoor facilities. SPIE will also provide janitorial and event services, handle waste management, and take charge of the drinking water, heat and electricity supply.
Considering a building over its entire life-cycle is crucial for the success of PPP projects. The specialists at SPIE are particularly well versed in operating life-cycle models. SPIE, as a private partner, helps to reduce operating costs. The multi-technical provider is already operating 50 schools in Offenbach District and the Town Hall in Gladbeck, among other facilities.
