SPIE Wins £2.6m Contract for Installation Upgrade at Manchester Airport

The firm will be responsible for the installation of the LED lighting upgrade for the A538 Manchester Airport Tunnels for Runways 1 and 2

London, October 23rd, 2017 – SPIE UK has been awarded the contract for the installation of the LED lighting upgrade for the A538 Manchester Airport Tunnels, which serve runways 1 and 2. The 20-week contract, worth in excess of £2.6 million, commenced in May 2017 as part of a planned refurbishment scheme alongside Galliford Try Plc, the construction and regeneration group.

The A538 is a key road link providing access to Manchester Airport; therefore a key challenge has been to keep traffic disruption to a minimum. Given SPIE’s experience and knowledge, its expert teams were able to come up with a bespoke solution of undertaking the work in 24hr shift patterns within the planned programme of road closures.

SPIE demonstrated unrivalled tunnel refurbishment experience and excellence through the delivery of innovative, cost-effective and energy-efficient tunnel lighting solutions to secure this contract. Manchester Airport particularly valued SPIE’s ongoing commitment to Health & Safety (HSE) and Quality on previous contracts – one of many similar that have been completed in the last 5 years. The upgrade adds to SPIE’s impressive portfolio of infrastructure work in North West England.

Teaming up once again with established LED lighting manufacturer Philips Lighting, SPIE are installing state-of-the-art LED lighting technology. The energy-efficient, low maintenance and controllable tunnel lighting system will significantly reduce the energy consumption and running costs compared to the existing installation, whilst complying with the latest standards.

Philip Kinsella, Operations Director of SPIE UK’s Industrial Services division, comments: “It is a testament to our highly-skilled workforce that our knowledge and expertise has enabled us to develop our relationship further with the customer. Though the issue of road closures meant that the work was always going to be a challenge, our flexible and quality solutions help ensure minimum disruption, whilst still completing the work to the highest standard, which has been demonstrated in our previous works.”
